“Nameless Here For Evermore”: To Sing Well Is to Avoid Naming

These themes are illustrated even more strongly, ever more strangely, in “The Raven.” Turning then from ideal and otherworldly bird figures not obviously allied to death to the common raven and its fatal symbolism, Poe associates the idea of singing with a kind of inversion and explication of the themes so far described.[53] Poe writes:

“Doubtless,” said I, “what it utters is its only stock and store

Caught from some unhappy master whom unmerciful Disaster

Followed fast and followed faster till his songs one burden bore—

Till the dirges of his Hope that melancholy burden bore

Of ‘Never—nevermore.’”[54]
